Retirement in Paeroa: What Makes It So Special?

Let’s be honest, if you mention Paeroa, some people might roll their eyes or joke about it being “just that town with the big L&P bottle.” But anyone who actually spends time here knows it’s a place with a lot going for it.

Whether you’re after beautiful scenery, great walking and cycling tracks, friendly locals, or a laid-back lifestyle, Paeroa has plenty to offer, especially for those looking for a slower pace without feeling isolated.

A River Walk Worth Talking About

One of the best things about living in Paeroa? The Ohinemuri River Walk. If you’ve never done it at sunset, you’re missing out. The way the light hits the water, the trees casting long shadows over the grass, it’s the kind of peaceful moment that makes you stop and appreciate where you are.

It’s not just a pretty walk either. You’ll often see locals out for a stroll, enjoying a coffee from one of the nearby cafés, or stopping for a chat. It’s got that classic small-town feel where people still say “morning” when they pass you.

A Short Drive to One of NZ’s Best Walks

Speaking of walks, Karangahake Gorge is right on Paeroa’s doorstep, and it’s easily one of the most underrated spots in the country. The old gold mining tunnels, swing bridges, and the Windows Walk make it feel like a step back in time - with scenery that’s just as breathtaking today.

Whether you’re up for a proper hike or just a gentle wander with a stop for photos, the gorge is one of those places you never get sick of visiting. Plus, it’s an easy drive from Paeroa, so you can go whenever you feel like it.

Perfect for Cyclists (Or Just Casual Riders)

If you like to get out on the bike, Paeroa is right in the middle of the Hauraki Rail Trail, one of New Zealand’s best cycling tracks. The trail follows old railway corridors dating back to 1898 and winds through scenic countryside, gold-mining history, and even a few excellent café stops.

Some highlights from the trail:

Paeroa to Waihi (24km, 2-3 hours one way) - Ride through the spectacular Karangahake Gorge, with its gold mining relics, the famous Windows Walk, and a 1100-metre railway tunnel (bring a headlamp!). You can even hop on the Goldfields Railway vintage train for a fun break.

Paeroa to Te Aroha (23km, 2-3 hours) - A relaxing ride through lush Waikato farmland, with views of Mt Te Aroha (aka the ‘Mountain of Love’). It’s worth packing your togs for the Te Aroha Mineral Spas - perfect for tired muscles after a day on the bike.

Even if you're not a hardcore cyclist, the Rail Trail is great for a leisurely ride. Stop for coffee, take in the fresh air, and enjoy the scenery at your own pace.

Small Town, Big Personality

Paeroa might not be a big city, but it’s got character. The town is packed with quirky antique shops, weekend markets, and good old-fashioned Kiwi hospitality. Locals here look out for each other, and there’s always something happening - whether it’s the Paeroa Highland Games, various antique fairs, or a live music festival or just a good old chat over coffee at The Refinery

And if you ever need a bigger city fix, Tauranga, Hamilton, and Auckland are all within easy reach - but honestly, after a while, you might find you don’t miss the traffic.

It’s no surprise that people are starting to see Paeroa as more than just a roadside stop. Even Stuff recently highlighted how Aucklanders are moving here for a better quality of life - especially retirees, with half of Longridge Country Estate’s residents coming from Auckland. So, is Paeroa just that place with the big soft drink bottle?

Hardly. Sure, it’s a small town, and like anywhere, it has its quirks. But if you take the time to look around, you’ll see what makes it a special place to live. It’s peaceful without being dull, friendly without being intrusive, and surrounded by some of the best scenery in the country.

And with Longridge Country Estate right here, it’s also a fantastic place to retire, offering space, comfort, and a real sense of community.

If you’re curious about what life here could look like, come and take a look around.

Not bad for a town some people only know for a soft drink.
